Handi Points – Chore Charts and More! October 26, 2008

Filed under: The World Around Us — Hattie @ 2:07 am

So, I admit it, I love watching Nanny 911.  I love knowing that there are worse parents out there than me.  Apparently I am a slow learner though – I can’t seem to make my children perfect, even after years of watching said show.  One of the common tricks I see on a regular basis however, is the chore chart.  Tonight, as I was cruising in the blogosphere, I came upon Mommy Points - a site where parents can create chore charts for their children and where children can update, maintain and earn points towards rewards from said chore charts.  In my house the wee ones are too young to read a chart (and I am not crafty enough to make fancy picture magnet thingys) and the old one just won’t humour me.  I don’t know if I will ever use a chore chart in the future, but on tv it does seem to work – but so does that spray on hair for men!  I find it challenging enough keeping my family calendar up dated each month.  I seriously have to put aside the entire morning on the first day of every month and make sure all my stickers are on the right days and everything is noted (yes, I am anal like that). I really don’t have the inclination to dedicate more time to creating a system to complete chores when I can scream pretty loud and have an evil eye that makes my family move fast and clean hard!

Canadian Politics October 3, 2008

Filed under: The World Around Us, Things That Make Me Go HMMM — Hattie @ 6:19 pm

Is it wrong that I enjoyed and watched more of the Vice Presendtial debates than the Leadership debate last night?  Why can’t Canadian politics be more entertaining and exciting?  I actually care so little about what is happening in my own back yard compared to my neighbours – and that, is a little sad.  I am not an American wanna be – I just feel like their political atmosphere is so much more electric that ours is at the moment.  Maybe it is just that in Canada there is no change coming.  There is no exciting candidate who will make history and change the face of Canadian politics.  I wish there were some choice here, and May does seem to be a worthy opponent, but I don’t know if she will actually have enough impact to make a difference on the hill.  I know I am not Conservative.  I know I don’t like the Liberals.  This really does’t leave me with a whole lot of options.  So, really at this point, it is sort of boring.  I much prefer to tune into the American stations and see their bebates – hard hitting questions and know that on Saturday night I am going to laugh my ass off watching SNL and seeing this weeks recaps of Palin’s proliferations.

Hmm – I wonder what would make the Canadian political atmosphere more enjoyable.  I think it might help if I heard more from my candidates – can’t even tell you who is running in my area – and I am looking for the signs.  I guess I can always do more.  I can work harder to find out who is in my area…but isn’t that what campainging is about – getting your own name out there – shouldn’t they be trying to find me?

A Knock At My Door September 14, 2008

Filed under: The World Around Us, Things That Make Me Go HMMM — Hattie @ 8:29 pm

I have mentioned that I live in a very small town before.  But today, the strangest and nicest thing happened.  It is Sunday and I am chillin in the living room watching Treehouse (what else would I be watching) and I see a little face looking in the window beside our front door.  I wasn’t sure what she was looking for – we had just been outside with dog and maybe she wanted to come meet her.  She knocked and she came in with a friend in tow.  They wanted to come in and see our house.  They are two nice little girls whom I have never met before.  The couldn’t have been older than five or so.  They wanted to go downstairs and play with our toys and our dog and my girls.  UMMMMM, okay, I guess…but wasn’t too sure.  Not that I was afraid of these little girls…but they should have been afraid of me….and they weren’t.  I asked them their names and told them they were welcome to stay.  I asked to phone their moms to let them know they were here – last thing I would want is to cause a mom panick over a missing child.  They didn’t stay long, but it was strange.  I loved that they were so nice and eager to meet people – a little worried that they would just walk into a strangers house and make themselves at home.  Lucky for them, I am a nice person….and would never hurt them.  I hope my own girls have a little more fear about them.  Of couse, I told them they could come back anytime they wanted to play, but they should probably bring their moms over to meet me.  Hmmm, I wonder how long it will take for them to make their way back over here – and with their moms in tow.

Lover of Laundry July 28, 2008

Is it wrong that I enjoy doing laundry?  I have never really enjoyed laundry in the past.  This is a new love affair for me.  My dad’s wife is a lover of laundry.  Really, she is a lover of all things cleaning related, but laundry in particular.  For me, it all changed with the installation of a clothesline out back.  Of course, my washer and dryer is on our lower level  (we have a bi-level) and I have to go down, and then up and then down again to get to the back yard, but it is all okay (even the really heavy loads of towels isn’t a bother).  It takes me forever to take the clothes down and then put more up.  That is okay too.  I love being outside.  I love the smell of our clothes on the line.  I love knowing that I am doing a good thing by hanging our clothes.  I am amazed that the process hasn’t been daunting…yet.  It has only been about 20 loads I have done this way….maybe by my 100th load I will be ready to go back to the dryer.

I wonder when S and I switch places, if he will find the laundry as appealing as I will…hmmm, probably not.

Avenue Vineyard July 21, 2008

Yesterday M and I went to church with a family friend.  It was the first time I had been to the Avenue Vineyard Community Church.  I was not too sure what to make of it, it isn’t what I typically think of when I think of a church.  The service is held above an office.  It is really just a meeting room with office chairs.  There is another room for sunday school classes.  There is no pulpit.  There was no fancy dress.  I was pleasantly surprised.  The average age of the congregation had to be about 35 and there were almost more children than adults present.  Off to the side in the main room there were some mats and toys for the the smaller kids….the ones who just would never sit still long enough or be quiet enough.  I relaxed, knowing that I could easily bring E and H and know they wouldn’t be a disturbance.  The sermon was non like I had ever heard before.  It was more of a bible study group.  There was a topic presented, passages read, open discussion.  I was so impressed with this format.  I can easily see our family making thir church our home.  It has been a while since we have all been to church together.  I loved attending Robertson Wesley United Church.  I loved the teachings, the environment.  I don’t think it was a place to bring such small children though….maybe just my kids.

Although this new church is almost an hour away, I think we will make a go of it.  Of course, I have only been to 1 service.  We may change our minds down the road, but we are open to trying new things and we are exicted about this new adventure.

Happy Canada Day!

I am a Canadian and most times, I am proud of that.  I love our country.  I love the place I live in our country.  I love the freedoms we have.  I love our universal health care (of course, there are parts of it which could use improving…but in general, we are so fortunate to have access to the best in the world).  I am so proud that our country offers a full year parental leave.  I am proud that we are ‘peace keepers’.  I am proud that we are forward thinking in terms of gay marriage.  I am proud that we have a great sense of humour in general.  I am so proud of so many things.  If I were to travel, I would proudly show off my maple leaf.  I am a hockey watching, skate owning, touqe wearing Canadian.

All that being said…we had a pretty laid back day.  We spent the majority of the day at my dad’s house.  We were helping get his air conditioning installed and a floor built for his new gazebo in the back yard.  The kids were into everything…..and even managed to escape the back yard!  There was much sun had…much sprinkler running…much laughing.  This evening, friends of ours came over for supper and a little Wii.  We bowled, we tennis’d.  It was good all around.  Now, I am making a huge pot of soup…apparently having the temperature in the low 30’s today wasn’t enough heat for me to avoid wanting a pot of hamburger soup.  I hope we have a fire again tonight.  I don’t think we will make it to any fire works..the girls have been in bed for a couple of hours already and the sun isn’t even fully down.

Next year, we will hopefully make it to a parade and fireworks.  This year I am happy to lounge in the hamock in front of the fire pit, eating marshmellows S so perfectly toasts for me!

Happy Day!

I think I am going to just let the girls be.  I know it sounds simple, but hey, that’s what life is about right…being simple?  Maybe not for alot of people.  Being simple, that is.  I am having alot of fun just sitting outside watching my kids.  Our yard isn’t all that big really.  But, we have a nice space.  It is private and relaxing.  Kids don’t really need alot to make them happy.  I think I could learn something from them here.  A bubble machine.  A small slide.  Some balls of various sizes and air pressure.  A place to sit when you are tired.  Really, is there much more you need to be happy?  Everything is new to them.  Playing in the grass.  Playing with bugs.  Digging in my plants.  Looking up at the clouds passing over head.  Drawing all over the fence, the patio, the door with the chalk.

It is pretty relaxing out here.  I think I could fall asleep.  Hmmm.  I might just do that.

Jay Walkers Festival June 7, 2008

Yesterday we all went to the Jay Walker’s Festival in a town close to our village.  It was very similar to a fair our old home town had every yeard called the Abbotsford Berry Festival.  Both my husband and I grew up going to this downtown festival.  I loved it.  My favorite was local corn on the cob and smoked salmon.  Not to mention all the berries and ice cream you could eat.  There was the prerequiste local dancers doing their thing and of course a seniors banjo band to play the day away.  There was over priced rides which were much more fun at night with the lights lit up.  It was just alot of fun to see your down town transformed into a carnival atmosphere.

How lucky were we to discover a simialr event in our own new back yard!  We strolled around the tables, looking at the wares.  We snacked on food cooked by the local Lion’s club.  We listened to a young women who sounded alot like Jewel.  The kids didn’t make it on a ride.  It was a little over our budget yesterday…and I have a fear of rides that are taken down and reassembled in a twenty-four hour period.  The kids had a great morning and so did I.  I am looking forward to next years event now.  Nice to start making memories with our own children, even though we aren’t in our old town.

My Daily Rant June 6, 2008

My husband mentioned last night that the company who makes Hummer SUV’s, will no longer be making them, except for military use!  Is this right?  Are they really going to stop producing this gas guzzling beast of a SUV?  Just yesterday our local news was talking about big trucks and SUV’s and how people around here aren’t buying smaller cars at all….bigger ones in fact!  A local mom with two kids was interviewed and she just couldn’t imagine fitting her two children into anything smaller than her Ford Explorer…maybe she has Obese children who require custom fitted car seats….hmmm.   I understand that some industries require the use of large trucks and such for their daily operations.  What I don’t get is how a family of four can’t wrap their minds around downsizing.

I blame McDonald’s for this trend.  Everything in our world is ‘upsized’ now.  We can’t just have  a large pop with our Big Mac…we must have a pop so large we can’t possibly drink it.  We have to have so many fries that an immigrant family of five can feast off of one order.  We are told daily that we need to have bigger better things, whoa…but not a big but or a big belly, or big thighs….but boobs are okay!  It is so confusing.  I want the biggest vehichle around to haul the smallest ass in town…hmm.  Big hair is out, but big lips are in.  I can’t keep up with the times.  I believe that I was born in the wrong time.  If I were apart of the first settlers to Canada, I would be picked to be a bride first…I have enough meat on my bones to ensure I would last a hard winter.  If I had met Michelangelo, he surely would have painted my rounded body.  I am a sex symbol in the wrong era!  I am backwards for today.  I have a big ass and I want to shove it into the smallest car around!
